My feedback, thoughts and ideas.

Message16 Juil 2013, 17:23

I don’t do these kind of threads, as I tend to feel that one person’s voice really doesn’t matter. This is probably also the case now, but I feel that this game is a niche that requires our feedback and our ideas. I am a big fan of cycling and the Tour de France in general, so I could not resist buying the TDF games when they were released. My Mac does not allow me to play PCM (next year Cyanide better release a Mac version!), so this is the only cycling fix I get gamewise. And it’s a great fix in general.

Pleasing:
Great improvements compared to TDF11 + TDF12

- The ability to simulate the stage to whatever point you wish. No doubt that this should have been possible in the first TDF game, but that’s a different topic.
- The ability to switch riders.
- A faster game in general.
- Team challenges. These are great and I am actually having a great time completing these. 100% for all teams is the goal!
- A less tiresome game compared to the previous 2 games. I can see myself playing this for a long time.
- It’s now fun to play with all teams. The challenges and the fact that the game is faster than TDF11/12 makes me want to try to win the jerseys with outsiders.
- More licensed teams. Now you just need the license for the rest of them.
- It’s great that the team car tells you important facts during the stage, like “you seem to be the best climber in the group” etc. This is pleasing to see, but it should be improved so you get even more facts and important details.

Disappointing, lacking or buggy:

- The team communication HUD is very bad. It’s so bad that I almost never use it. It takes too much time and it really does not make sense.
- The riders are not following orders. I get so frustrated when the rider responds “I’m in a bad position” after I order him to attack. Then get in position and attack!? When they follow the orders, it takes forever. This, combined with the bad HUD design, makes you ignore your teammates completely.
- Boring crowd. They are boring and I miss those guys running with flags beside your rider in the mountains.
- Clumsy rider controls (mostly in the peloton and when going fast downhill).
- The rider bounces off the edge of the road like a ball when you hit it. This I probably not considered as a bug but it really looks stupid.
- When taking a riders wheel with RB (Xbox), your rider will sometimes lose the wheel and ride straight in tight turns. This is very frustrating as you lose time and energy when you hit the edge of the road.
- The achievements are too boring and offer no challenge.
- The menus are fiddly.
- The game is not responding properly to my controls in the menus and simulation phase. Often, I need to push the same buttons several times before something happens. This is very bad using the left stick to navigate also.
- The “Analyze rider” function is a little pointless. I want to know if the rider is looking fresh or if he is looking like he is about to break. Also you should be told what his prospected goals are right now. In a breakaway, does your team manager think that he will be going for the mountains sprints? Is he low placed in the standings (so that the breakaway will not ride to catch him)? Does the team manager thing that I should beat him in a final sprint or try to get away from him before? You could get a lot of useful information, but you mostly get none as it is now.
- The last stage on Champs Elysees is very unrealistic. It can easily be won by attacking from the start.

AI problems and weirdness:

- Riders not following orders as mentioned above.
- Your important riders are often badly positioned in the peloton. When simulation to the last big climb, why is my fully rested climber leader positioned in the middle of the pack? He should be in the front at this point. Same thing with sprinters before the intermediate sprints. He should be in the front part of the peloton 5-10 km before the sprint, if he is well placed on the points standings.
- Besides the obvious top contenders (Froome, Contador, Valverde etc.), the other leaders (silver/bronze climber leaders) are too passive. They are placed badly in the peloton before the important climbs and they never really compete for the jerseys or the stage wins. The leaders should use their specialty more often. Nibali attacking on a descent etc.
- When I attack with a leader and get a decent lead and then switch to a different rider (in the breakaway, for instance), then the leader will automatically fall back to the group instead of just continuing the effort.
- It is too easy to win the intermediate sprints. You can usually attack 3 km from the sprint and you’ll easily win it.

My ideas/suggestions:

- Improve all above-mentioned things. :)
- Now we are at the point where the game should allow you to give orders to the riders in the simulation phase.
- Give the riders more “personality”. It gets a little boring to look at the same animations and faces all the time. There should be more variety in the way riders ride and move. Also, the riders should have a different body size and they should have numbers on their backs. Why does Quintana have the same size as Tony Martin?
- 1st person perspective. Yeah, why not? Could be cool if you could ride in 1st perspective and see the front part of the bike and look over your shoulders with the right stick.
- There should be an ability to order a team mate to eat, instead of being forced to switch riders to do so.
- The possibility to make your own Tour with ALL the stages available (including all downloaded DLCs) and with your own stage order and specific rules. This could be so great and it could give the game a great replayability!
- General statistics page. Who many Tours have I won? How many stages have I won? How many jerseys have I won? How many days have I had the jerseys in total? What’s my best grand total time of a Tour? What’s my best time from the bottom of Mont Ventoux to the top? A lot of cool stats could have been counted throughout all plays.
- Stage highlights that can be saved and viewed any time.
- Make it possible to simulate time-trails
- Time differences illustrated on a bar where you can see all the groups and the gaps while riding, without having to push down on the D-pad.

My naive wishes: 8-)

- Vuelta / Giro DLC.
- Stage editor.
- Career mode. Starting off with a young custom made rider, you are to train, ride and develop your rider from a talented kid to a Tour legend.
- A full cycling season with all the pro tours and with a manager mode, where you can sign riders and manage a lot of thing. Yes, PCM lite for console.

Thank you for this very complete feedback.

I agree with most of the things you listed but is it possible to explain a bit more :
"Clumsy rider controls" and "The menus are fiddly" parts?

And, one more thing, if you can develop what you think is wrong with the teamcom. Is it the behavior of the rider, the way to give orders or its responsivness that bother you? I've already open a thread about this topic.

About the "anlayze rider", if you want to see if a rider is about to break, try to look at his animation, it can be a clue about his levels of energy.

Patatrasse a écrit:"Clumsy rider controls"

The controls feels a little off when taking sharp turns and while inside the peloton.

Though the green arrows help you decide how much you should brake on the descents, the turns feel very “heavy” and the color of the line is not to be trusted. For instance, on stage no. 14, you can attack on the second last hill. The descent has sharp corners and is very fast and short. You can take any rider, no matter if he is a downhill specialist or not, and take the corners almost full speed and gain about 1 minute to the peloton and win the stage. Then on the other hand, when going down some other corners that are as sharp as above, you’ll almost have to make a complete stop not to hit the edge (using same rider, to be noted). Sometimes you can cut 2 equally sharp corners the same way, but one of them can be taken full speed though the arrow is red, and the other you’ll have to brake hard even though the arrow is green/yellow. It’s just very difficult to figure out how the corners are to be handled as they feel very different, thought they look the same.

I don’t know if this makes any sense… :D

When the game is simulating and I want to check out the standings or your team, I sometimes need to move the left stick to the side 4-5 times to change the tab. This also happens when pressing the buttons sometimes. Quite often the game will register that I am holding down the right stick even though I’m not, making the game freak out. The sticks should only respond if they are moved more than 25% or so in the menus, and not 0,1% like now. :) These things make the menus very fiddly for me, but this can probably be fixed with updates.

Ok, I'll write a short idea of how the telecom could work.

I was not aware of this. I only noticed the animation when they are already done.
