What are the chances of a simpler editor being created soon?

Message28 Mars 2013, 16:46

Aswell as playing PCM i am also a big fan of football manager. To keep my self interested for longer i like to create teams/cyclists/competitions ect..

In football manager the editor is all set out very well and it's simply a case of making any changes you want to make and saving the database and then you go into the game and load it up. Why is it so much more complicated for PCM? I understand that it's a much smaller game and they probably have a smaller budget and less people working on the game ect.. but the editor that comes with the game is so simple and so boring. Yes, you can create your own rider and team and simply save it and load the game and play it, but then the stage editor is unbelievably complicated. Yes, once you know how to use it it's fairly easy but then it's the same with putting the stage into the game. You have to download these external editors and then follow loads of instructions and it just drives me crazy. I've successively got one stage into the game (which was done for me) and i can't for the life of me work out why i can't create my tour.

Also with creating a kit, i can't for the life of me work out why my kit doesn't appear in the game.

I don't mean for this to appear as a rant because it's not. I just really think a bit of work should be done to make the game editor more in depth and much more simplified. I don't want to spend my time having to name files a specific thing and then put it in a specific folder and name other things the same thing just to get it into the game. I was a database editor where you load the database. You can click 'create a kid' and you can create a kit and make chose a team to wear the kit and to save the database and then load the game up and the database and it's all done, no messing with specific file names and placing in the folder, the only thing i should have to do is create the kit, and chose which team i want to use it

Again, i don't mean for this to come off as a rant and maybe someone will have a great explanation on why this can't happen but anyone who has used football manager editor and pcm editor will see the difference in how complicated they are to use

The answer is that when we make efforts to make the game moddable, we immediatly get critics because "the game is made by the community".

Every time we tried to give more tools for edition, the only greeting was "why don't you solve the game bugs instead ?". It definitely doesn't help motivation, even though we have internal tools that can help the modding a lot.

I have to agree with Eyolfur. There is probably more important stuff to do than creating better editor tools.

By the way, I think the stage editor is really easy to handle, way easier than before PCM 2010. You can get what you are seeing in the editor which is great.

Even so I have to admit the Database editor isn't the best tool in the world. But you have to keep one thing in mind here. This editor guarantees you that your database is working. There are some other tools out there made by fans, which gives you already a huge amount of options but while increasing the risk of doing something wrong with the database ending in crashing the game. As long as the databases are still in .cdb format and are based on the same structure as before I don't see any need here, to be honest. Thank god, its at least editable.

This is Interesting, though. :P

I actually started working on multiple tools that i'd like to share with the communities.

First one is to check if the stage files (in the mod folder of my documents) are 100% compatible with a database. It will simply log to show if there are unused files, missing stage fallbacks or even missing files.

Second one is a database checker : writing routines to give feedbacks on database errors and database stats.

Last one is a new editor, not exe-dependant like the previous 'fulleditor' and giving direct interface to the cdb format.

The problem is that I'm programming these tools during my very limited free time, because they are not planned, it's just an extra.

I really like these ideas. Regarding the first tool, there are a lot of files out there which can cause a crash, for example podium files made by communities. If you don't have them, and a costum stage uses them the game is crashing while loading the race. So, this would be a very helpful tool to avoid something like this or at least give you a warning that there is something wrong. I don't know if you meant something like this, just saying.

The first idea was to check the Database and filesystem integrity, i didn't intend to read and check the stages. At least not in V1. Maybe the stages should be checked by the Stage Editor itself.

Thank You!!!!

I have been waiting for a better editor. I live in SW New Mexico and we have a great 5 day stage race that I would love to race with the stage editor. It's called "The Tour of the Gila". It is a big precursor to the Tour of Cali, this year 9 out of the top 16 riders in Cali raced in the Gila the week before. There's a lot of climbing, a time-trial, a down town crit. Every year I look at the Editor to see if I can re-create my hometown race and every year I am disappointed. Thank you for bringing this problem some attention. I would love to see a better "Editor".
