Pour ceux qui n'ont pas suivi l'affaire, Cavendish à fait ce geste lors de sa 2nd victoire au Tour de Romandie pour "faire taire ses détracteurs". Il s'excuse aujourd'hui publiquement pour ce geste.

Le deuxième tronçon de la troisième étape du Tour des Asturies, un contre-la-montre de 14 kilomètres couru autour de Castrillón, a vu la victoire de l'Espagnol Beñat Intxausti. Le coureur de la Euskaltel-Euskadi a devancé de 17 secondes son compatriote et coéquipier Jonathan Castroviejo, prenant du même coup la tête du général, à la veille de l'étape reine de ce tour.
